In this website, you will find tutorials on very good network open source and gratis tools under Linux that will let you gather statistics about your network. Please check the open source page for more details about the open source concept.

It is very frequent to see companies that have no idea of any statistics about their network.
However, it is very important to collect networking statistics for several reasons:

You will save money because you will be able to identify precisely the network bottlenecks and thus exactly which network link to upgrade instead of randomly upgrading them.
You will save time. For example, in case of a router crash, you will have its backup at hand or in case of a virus attack, you will be quickly informed and you will be able to rapidly react in consequence.

A lot of free open source tools are available for download on the internet but with very different achievement levels. It can range from from basic scripts to professional tools. We have tested and are still testing a lot of these tools and will give you tutorials about what we think are the best in terms of network and security.
In order to be selected for our tutorials, the tools must:

- Be very powerful even compared to similar commercial tools and already have very good references in benchmarks.
Be as easy as possible to install.
Have a good ergonomy and be easy to manage.
Have an active and large community.
Have no cost.

Even though some of the tools presented in our tutorials can be used on Microsoft Windows, they run better on Linux. Don't be scared if you only know the Windows OS and don't want to spend hours configuring the tools on Linux. To follow our tutorials, the only knowledge to have is a basic understanding of the UNIX/Linux file architecture and some very basic UNIX/Linux commands like "rm", "cd","cp", etc. We will give clear step-by-step tutorials with explanations in order to understand what is beeing done. "Packages" will be used as often as possible. These packages can be compared to Windows programs and are as easily installed as the latter.

As Explained in the "Linux page", a lot of different Linux distributions can be found. Even though the tools presented in our tutorials can be used on any distribution, please be aware that they are written for Debian or its derivative distributions like Ubuntu. It's not really possible to do a unique tutorial for all the Linux distributions because boot scripts, packages management systems and some other settings like the file architecture can slightly vary from one distribution to another. In our tutorials, we chose the Debian and Ubuntu Linux because of their freedom philosophy, their reliability and their very powerful package management system called APT.
