Debian for reliability and freedom.

Debian is one of the oldest Linux distributions and was created in 1993. It uses Linux as the kernel similarly to the other Linux distributions.

The first version known was called 0.01 and since 1996 the Debian versions are named after the characters of the "Toy Story" cartoon movie. Below are the three last Debian version:

Rather than being developed by commercial companies like most other Linux distributions, Debian is built by a worldwide community of developers with a non-profit philosophy. The goal of the Debian project is to stay away from business companies who could affect the Open Source sharing and freedom philosophy of Debian and its "Social Contract".

More than its freedom ideal, here are some other strong points of Debian:

-
-

-

the robustness and reliability of the system
a big community thanks to whom a lot of documentation can be found on the internet as well as help on forums.
a very powerful package management tool called APT
created in 1994.
To obtain more details about Debian, go to the Debian wikipedia page.

To check your Debian version:

#cat /etc/debian_version
4.0

To check your Linux kernel version, use the following command:

#uname -r
2.6.22-10-generic
